BEST RUNNING CLUBAtlanta Track ClubThe Atlanta Track Club guides dozens of smaller running clubs and is responsible for the largest road race in the country, the Peachtree Road Race 10K.“The enjoyment of a healthy lifestyle through running drives all that we do. Our signature event is the Peachtree Road Race, with a capped field of 55,000. The running community in Atlanta is very strong and continuing to expand. Our climate makes it easier for the casual and seasoned runner to train year round, especially through the winter months.”—Tracey Russell, executive director of the Atlanta Track Club NEXT BEST2. All registration is online to minimize paper use. We are encouraging the use of personal water bottles; disposable products will be used only when necessary; and everything possible will be recycled. Runners are encouraged to bring their own bowls and silverware to use at post race lunch. All proceeds will go to The National Committee for the New River, and we’re collecting Clif Bar and Balance Bar wrappers for the Terracycle Initiative. Being “green” is a flexible term, yet it almost always involves using the resources of the local community.”—Annette Bednosky, race director for the New River 50KBEST RUNNING TRAILArt Loeb TrailThe Art Loeb Trail is a 30-mile footpath traversing Pisgah National Forest from the Davidson River to the high elevations of Shining Rock Wilderness.“Art Loeb has over 9,000 feet in climbing in just under 30 miles. The panoramic vistas at 6,000 feet as the trail approaches the Shining Rock Wilderness are some of the best views in all of the Appalachians. There are plenty of great photo ops while running over Black Balsam and Tennant Mountains. What makes the Art Loeb so special is the wonderland of ancient granite plutons, high-altitude forests and expansive southern balds it traverses. Ultra runners love the Barkley because it’s almost impossible to complete.“I have been running for 32 years (including over 230 marathons and ultramarathons), and the Barkley was easily the most rewarding running experience of all. It has everything that I love in a challenge: roller coaster trails, obstacles to jump over or crawl through, big rocks and high walls to jump off, lots of slick and deep mud, flesh-tearing briers, insanely steep climbs where one cries for mommy, and insanely steep descents where idiots risk breaking their fool necks. Runners spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to find all 11 books hidden along the trail. By Dialogo April 27, 2012 ABOARD THE USS ELROD, At Sea — The frigate USS Elrod (FFG 55) along with an embarked U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) team recovered 89 bales of cocaine in support of Operation Martillo on April 20, the Navy said. A SH-60B Sea Hawk from the Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 60 Det. 3 on the Elrod responded after receiving a transmission from a P-3 surveillance aircraft operated by U.S. Customs Border Protection. Elrod joined in pursuit, along with authorities from Panama, of two 40-foot twin-engine vessels as they tried to evade authorities in the waters of the Western Caribbean. During the chase, cocaine was thrown into the sea, according to the Navy. The Navy-Coast Guard response team recovered 89 bales of cocaine, weighing 4,840 pounds, with an estimated value of more than US$362 million. “I am very proud of the teamwork and collaborative effort between the ship, our air detachment and our USCG Law Enforcement Detachment,” said Commander Jack Killman, the Elrod’s commanding officer. “Our mission is clear: to disrupt illicit trafficking that jeopardizes the safety in the region and ultimately our own national security.” [Public.navy.mil, 26/04/2012; Hamptonroads.com, 27/04/2012]
An interesting story comes from the town of Łódđa, the third most populous city in Poland, where resourceful workers set up six hives with 60 diligent bees on the roof of a local hotel within the Hilton tourist hotel chain. In Poland, according to Polish media, the Lodz case is not isolated and there are bee communities in several other cities, and experts are convinced that honey produced by “urban” bees, despite concerns that car degradation could harm urban bees and their honey, may be healthier. from that which arose in nature, away from urban environments. Namely, city bees pollinate plants in parks and collect honey there, and parks are not treated with any chemical pesticides, unlike fields where bees live in nature. Hilton took advantage of the fact that across the hotel is a park with various and lush vegetation, trees and flowers because “their” bees do not only pollinate the flowers that adorn the hotel environment.Ingenious hoteliers from Lodz calculate that each bee community brings 30 kilograms of quality honey per season, which will be tasted exclusively by hotel guests, so imaginative chefs have already designed a menu that includes honey produced on their roof. They recommend other hotels and other institutions near the parks to follow their example and – they will not regret it.Here we witness an example of the synergy of beekeeping and tourism, and in the example from Vinkovci we also see how beekeeping and tourism can work together.A unique honey souvenir in the shape of Orion, the oldest calendar in EuropeVinkovci beekeeper Goran Ferbežar, who has been engaged in beekeeping for five years, made an attractive souvenir that represents Vinkovci in the most beautiful way, more precisely, the long and rich history of the oldest town in Europe. He made a faithful replica of the Orion vessel from beeswax with all the symbols that mark the constellations of the night sky above Vinkovci. He also designed an attractive box for a replica of Orion made of wax, which also contains a short instructive explanation of what Orion is and why it is exceptional as an archaeological artifact.”I was thinking of making an authentic Vinkovci wax souvenir, because I already have several wax products, and the shelves on which I exhibit honey and other bee products have city motifs and give off a Vinkovci flair. Orion came to my mind because otherwise I think that in making souvenirs we should use more motifs from the distant past and make replicas of objects found in archeological excavations in the area of the city. I wanted to connect the pristine nature of bees because they fly in this area for millions of years and produce honey and wax in the same way and the vessel Orion, the oldest Indo-European calendar found in Vinkovci”, Says Goran Ferbežar.The Orion vessel in Vinkovci below today’s Hotel Slavonija was discovered by archaeologist dr.sc. Aleksandar Durman, and he understood the meaning of the symbol on it only 20 years later, and studying it revealed that it is the oldest calendar in Europe dating from 2600 BC.
NORTHERN Rangers and Western Tigers will continue their march in the Corona Invitational tournament following the first night of quarter final at the GFC ground. In the first game, Northern Rangers were pushed to their limits as they came against a Camptown side that breathed fire. The Rangers managed to score first through Sunil Logan in the 19th minute, but it was by no means over, as Campton’s Richie Richards re-balanced the scales again in the 41st.The match would continue with shots back and forth but it would take Northern Rangers penalties, 4 to be precise, to overturn Camptown’s three. In the second game of the night, it was a one-sided affair as Western Tigers progressed to a 6-0 bashing of Pele.Dellon Kells opened the scoring in the 9th minute with Jomel Pedro and Darren Benjamin each scoring inside the first half to seal the game early. However, Jarel Tyrell opened the scoring in the second half with a strike in the 55th while Benjamin returned for his second, and Mark Gittens closed off the game in the 75th.Matches continue tonight as Santos FC take on the Police Force team and GFC play Riddim Squad.
